Meet Roland Bachmeier, a passionate advocate for sustainability in the hospitality industry, with a career spanning the globe. From his work on the Royal Viking Sea cruise to his significant role in the Hyatt group, including the opening of Hyatt Seoul in South Korea, Roland brings a wealth of experience to the table.
In 1979, Roland’s journey led him to Madeira Island in Portugal, where he built and managed a chain of four units, totaling 650 beds. It was here that he demonstrated the remarkable benefits of embracing sustainability in the business. His dedication ranged from fostering a community of eco-enthusiasts known as the “Environment-Friendly Circle” to implementing eco-friendly products and practices in his properties.
His achievements are evident in the operation of Galomar, his hotel, which was recognized as the first self-sufficient hotel on Madeira Island. The hotel’s innovative measures include solar panels for energy supply, water-saving systems, waste separation, and a host of other eco-friendly initiatives that not only benefit the environment but also contribute to cost savings.
